Harris Teeter

W.T. Harris opened the first Harris Market in 1936 at 1504 Central Avenue with eight employees.  The popular grocery grew out of its small location, and in 1949 Harris contructed a new stand-alone store two blocks down Central Avenue.  The modern market featured free parking, air conditioning, and expanded hours of operation.

In less than twenty-five years he had nine stores.  Then in 1960 Harris Market merged with Teeter's Food Mart of Mooresville to become Harris Teeter.  The company and its members have consistently contributed to the well-being of Charlotte and especially Plaza Midwood.

"I think it's made a really excellent start in getting people to realize that just because something's older doesn't mean it's obsolete." -Robert Pearson, head of public relations for Harris-Teeter November 4, 1982

When the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association sought partnerships for revitalization, Harris Teeter was among the most enthusiastic corporate volunteers.  They are currently rebuilding their Plaza Midwood location, continuing their long time connection with the area.
