The first automobile came to Charlotte on December 5, 1899. The gasoline-powered vehicle, purchased by Dorr and Charles F. Wadsworth, cost $600.

Southern Public Utilities Company began integrating buses into its transit system in 1934. Full implementation was complete in March 1938. This photo circa 1936 shows the buses parked in front of the company car barn on South Boulevard.

A photograph of the map shows that the Plaza Midwood area was taking its modern shape. Much development had yet to occur beyond Morningside and Masonic drives. Notice Independence Boulevard runs through the Chantilly neighborhood to the south.
