The Plaza once connected to Clarice Avenue in Chantilly. Now all that remains of its southern terminus is a dead-end overlooking Independence Freeway.

The construction of Independence Freeway in the 1980s created a stark barrier between Plaza Midwood and Chantilly.

A photograph of the map shows that the Plaza Midwood area was taking its modern shape. Much development had yet to occur beyond Morningside and Masonic drives. Notice Independence Boulevard runs through the Chantilly neighborhood to the south.

Plaza-Midwood wasn't the only neighborhood threatened by proposed roads. The adjacent areas of Chantilly and Elizabeth, directly attached to PM before the construction of Independence Boulevard, were endangered by a rerouting of that highway. …
