By the mid 1960s, older neighborhoods like Plaza Midwood were vulnerable to the urban renewal trend that swept the nation.  Already, the historically-black downtown Brooklyn neighborhood had fell victim to Charlotte's movement to revitalize slums and undesirable areas.

In 1974 residents of what is now Plaza Midwood teamed with homeowners in Belmont and Villa Heights to the northwest to successfully combat the widening of Matheson Avenue through their neighborhoods.
