Lawyers Road

Since colonial times, a road had existed out past the eastern limits of Charlotte.  What is today known as Central Avenue was known historically as Lawyers Road.  According to historian Thomas W. Hanchett, the road was named because of its heavy use by lawyers riding from Charlotte to the large courthouse at Wadesboro.

As shown in the photo to the left, in 1905 this was a muddy country road.  Charlotte streets would not begin to be paved until 1907.
