With no streetcar service to Chatham Estates and adjacent neighborhoods, the jitney bus moved in to fill the transportation hole.  However, residents were less inclined to use the buses.  In a 1919 Charlotte Observer letter to the editor, Piedmont Park resident Jake Newell remarked that commuters "take their stands along the way and look so yearningly and pleadingly at all autoists who pass that they are generally taken in and landed at the square.”  However, by 1920 the area would once again receive streetcar service through Southern Public Utilities Company.
