The signature portion of Paul Chatham's residential development was to be a streetcar line utilizing Thomas Edison's storage battery car.  However, this technology proved to be unreliable, described by one resident as "poor old four-wheeled rattle-trap from Chatham Estates."  By 1918, the line had gone bankrupt and residents were forced to find alternative forms of transportation into downtown Charlotte.
